Rocket.Chat Guidelines for Law Enforcement Requests

Introduction

As a provider of secure, mission-critical communication infrastructure for enterprises and governments worldwide, Rocket.Chat Technologies Corp. (“Rocket.Chat”) is fundamentally committed to safeguarding customer data sovereignty and privacy. We strictly evaluate all law enforcement requests to ensure rigorous legal compliance while protecting the confidentiality and security of the organizations that trust our platform.

These Guidelines are intended to provide general information and do not create any contractual or legal obligations. Rocket.Chat reserves the right to object to or decline any request that is unlawful, overbroad, or otherwise inconsistent with applicable law.

How Rocket.Chat Operates (Architecture & Data Availability)

Rocket.Chat is a versatile communication platform with different deployment models. Understanding these models is critical, as Rocket.Chat does not have access to user data in all deployments.

Rocket.Chat Cloud Services (Hosted by Us):

Description: Workspaces hosted on our cloud infrastructure (please see our infrastructure subprocessors).
Data Access: Rocket.Chat acts as the data processor. We generally possess basic subscriber information and, subject to valid legal process, may access content stored on our infrastructure.

Self-Managed / On-Premise (Private Servers):

Description: Clients download our software (Enterprise or Community/FOSS) and run it on their own infrastructure or third-party data centers.
Data Access: Rocket.Chat has NO access to these servers. We cannot access, view, or export user data, messages, or logs from self-managed instances.
Action for Authorities: You must direct your request to the administrator of the specific server or the hosting provider/ISP hosting the domain

Rocket.Chat Open Server (open.rocket.chat):

Description: A public community server managed directly by Rocket.Chat.
Data Access: Subject to our Terms of Service and Code of Conduct. We possess account information for users registered on this specific server.

Categories of Data

Rocket.Chat distinguishes between the following categories of data:

Basic Subscriber Information: such as name, email address, account creation date, and billing information (if applicable).
Non-Content Records: such as IP addresses, timestamps, and account activity logs.
Content: such as messages, files, and other communications stored within a workspace.

The availability of each category depends on the deployment model described above.

Server Lookup Tool

Before submitting a request, use our Server Lookup tool to determine if a specific workspace URL is hosted by Rocket.Chat or if it is self-managed.

Note: If the lookup indicates the server is not hosted by us, Rocket.Chat cannot provide user content or activity logs.
